There is no better way to start your day off then with a healthy delicious green smoothie packed with vitamins, minerals, antioxidants and so much more! If you are not already doing this, now is the perfect time to start. Although it may not seem like it outside, spring has just arrived and not only should you be spring-cleaning your house but also your body. Something as simple as making a smoothie with fresh fruits and vegetables everyday can make a drastic change and you will be amazed how much better you will feel in no time.
A few quick reasons why you need to start blending:
1. Helps us eat healthier
With today’s hectic lifestyle sometimes it is difficult to fit 8-9 servings of fruits and vegetables into your diet. This makes it much easier, and you can even hide your nutrient rich greens in your smoothie and still enjoy the delicious taste.
2. Increases our fibre intake
Fruits and vegetables in their natural raw form is when they have the highest amount of fibre; compared to when they are cooked or juiced, they loose some of their nutrient content. The standard American diet is very deficient in fibre, so this helps us reach the daily-recommended value of 25 grams. Another bonus is fibre can assist with weight loss!
3. Reduces digestive issues
When people are eating in a rush… which most of us are, we aren’t chewing our food properly and breaking it down. This decreases nutrient absorption as well as causes digestive issues such as bloating, gas, constipation and more. Using a blender breaks down the food for you so you can give your digestive tract a break!
4. Increases bioavailability of nutrients
The blender breaks down food into molecules that are more easily digested and absorbed.
Here is one of my favourite green smoothie recipes!
Recipe:
2 cups of organic spinach (or kale)
1 frozen banana (medium sized)
1-tablespoon of organic nut butter (I like almond)
¾- cup unsweetened almond milk
½-cup plain Greek yogurt
Blend all ingredients together and drink up!
(If I am pressed for time making breakfast or lunch and want to make this smoothie into a meal I add a scoop of vanilla protein powder)
Enjoy!!
